Re-train as a gas fitter.
If you would like to re-train as a gas fitter, then the ICON basic gas utilisation (BGU) Programme is the course for you.
If you have mechanical, electrical, building, construction or service sector experience, you can become a fully qualified Gas fitter. The Icon gas fitter programme can give access to the ACS gas assessments which in turn allow you to become CORGI registered.
ACS Assessments Qualification
In order to qualify for entrance to the ACS assessments, candidates not already in possession of an ACS certificate or CORGI registration need to either complete a relevant S/NVQ qualification in gas, or complete the Basic Gas Utilisation course.
Basic Gas Utilisation Training Course
The Basic Gas Utilisation training
course meets all of the requirements for CORGI registration.
What does the course entail?
The Basic Gas Utilisation Course commences with a thirty five hour program within
the Icon training centre (hours accrued via day or evening attendance), for the
purpose of the following:-
- Introduction to the scheme and the evidence portfolio
- Delivery of initial gas safety training and the Icon training pack
- Assessment of relevant experience and the methods of accrediting this within the scheme rules
- The formation of individual schemes for each candidate based on projected course requirements
Further to this initial program each candidate will embark on his/her individual scheme, with the duration being directly related to each candidate’s experience.
In addition to the Icon centre based training, the candidate will be assisted in
the production of a portfolio of evidence gathered ‘On the Job’ whilst
supervised by a CORGI registered engineer.
The duration of the ‘On the Job’ experience and development of the portfolio
will be determined by the type and frequency of gas work undertaken by the candidate.
We will require evidence of the CORGI registration of the supervising engineer and we will also make an on - site visit during the ‘On the Job’ period.
Once your individual training and necessary ‘On the Job’ experience is completed the portfolio of evidence must be assessed and approved by Icon. This will remain in the possession of the Training Centre, as it is an auditable item and part of the ACS Scheme.
You will have gathered from the information above that the process is aimed at the mature person with preferably some plumbing, building or engineering background. An important requirement is access to work with an existing CORGI registered engineer.
How much will the course cost me?
- The initial thirty five hour Icon based session will cost £450 plus vat
- Dependent on your individual training plan (formulated within the thirty five hours), a cost of £70 plus vat will be charged for any extra training days required.
- The ‘On the job’ assessment carried out by Icon will cost £95 plus vat though this may vary dependent upon the distance travelled by the assessor
- The ACS assessments vary in cost dependent on the specific gas work envisaged eg. The domestic core gas safety assessment (CCN1) plus domestic central heating boilers assessment (CEN1) will cost £400 plus vat (inclusive of certification), further prices can be viewed on our ACS pages.
