Gas Hotplates - Siting and Clearances Requirements

This is an extract from our Domestic Gas Fitting Handbook.

Gas Hot Plates

Following feedback from kitchen designers and installers, BS6172: 2004 was amended to incorporate new dimensions for combustible free zones for gas hobs. The 50mm clearance previously required remains the same but is only required to a height of 460mm.

It can be seen from the diagrams (above and top right) that the zone forms an inverted 'T'. (The requirements for high level and independent grill units have not changed).

There is also a recommendation that the minimum distance from the hob to adjacent units or walls should be 300mm.

Where there is a discrepancy between the minimum mounting height of a cooker hood, i.e. 760mm and the manufacturer's instructions, the higher dimension should be used.

  • A clearance of 300mm is recommended for manoeuvring saucepans etc. However, this may be reduced to not less than 50mm to combustible materials (see also manufacturer's installation instructions).
